Childcare...

For those who are unfamiliar with childcare facilities here are some explanations:

Childminders: They look after children in the childminder's own home and should provide a homely atmosphere. Since Sept. 2001 a government body OFSTED, have taken over regulation of childcare. It has visited every childminder and daycare provider. A number of childminders have been stopped from operating. Those considered "good" will be visited every two years and the rest more frequently until they improve. Childminders can often be flexible about the hours they work. Every childminder is different so lookout for one that will suit your family. Some are part of a network, these childminders have agreed to meet set standards and some may be accredited to offer Eary Years Education.

Pre-School Playgroups:  Children in pre-schools are usually aged between three and five but sometimes there are places for two year olds as well. Pre-schools usually open for sessions of about three hours. Most have the same term dates as the local schools. Pre-schools, also known as playgroups or playschools, will usually have places for between ten and twenty children. They are registered with OFSTED's Early Years Inspectorate and are inspected every year.

Out of School Care: These services are for school aged children and are usually based near schools and aim primarily to help families where both parents work. They can be registered with OFSTED provided they are caring for children under eight years for more than two hours per day and more than six days per year. The different types of service are as follows:     Breakfast Clubs    - open in the morning and includes breakfast.    After School Clubs  - open 3.30 - 6.00pm.  Before and After Clubs  - open mornings and afternoons. Holiday Playschemes  - open during school holidays between about 8.30am and 6.00pm. In England out of school services are sometimes called Kids Clubs..
